Use of intercooler

2023-12-04

The intercooler is generally made of aluminum alloy material. According to the different cooling medium, our common intercooler can be divided into air-cooled and water-cooled 2 kinds

In general, the intercooler can only be seen in the car with the supercharger installed. Because the intercooler is actually a turbocharged accessory, its role is to reduce the high temperature air temperature after pressurization, so as to reduce the heat load of the engine, improve the intake volume, and then increase the power of the engine. For the turbocharged engine, the intercooler is an important component of the turbocharged system. Whether it is a supercharged engine or a turbocharged engine, it is necessary to install an intercooler between the supercharger and the intake manifold.

The function of the intercooler is to reduce the intake air temperature of the engine. So why lower the intake temperature? Let's introduce the following:

(1) The temperature of the exhaust gas discharged by the engine is very high, and the heat conduction through the supercharger will increase the temperature of the intake air. Moreover, the density of the air will increase in the process of compression, which will also lead to the increase of the temperature of the air discharged by the supercharger. With the increase of the pressure, the oxygen density will decrease, thus affecting the effective inflation efficiency of the engine. If you want to further improve the inflation efficiency, it is necessary to reduce the intake temperature. Data show that under the same air-fuel ratio condition, the engine power can be increased by 3% ~ 5% for every 10 ℃ drop in the temperature of the pressurized air.

(2) If the uncooled pressurized air enters the combustion chamber, it will not only affect the inflating efficiency of the engine, but also easily lead to too high combustion temperature of the engine, causing knock and other faults, and will increase the NOx content in the exhaust gas of the engine, resulting in air pollution.

In order to solve the adverse effects of pressurized air heating, it is necessary to install an intercooler to reduce the intake air temperature.

(3) Reduce engine fuel consumption.

(4) Improve the adaptability to altitude. In high altitude areas, the use of intermediate cooling can use a higher pressure ratio of the compressor, which makes the engine get more power, improve the adaptability of the car.

(5) Improve the matching and adaptability of supercharger.

Cleaning cycle of intercooler:

The intercooler needs to be cleaned after 18 months. Generally, only the car with supercharger can see the intercooler, because it is actually the supporting parts of turbocharging, the role is to reduce the temperature of the high temperature air after pressurization, so as to reduce the heat load of the engine, increase the intake volume, and then increase the power of the engine. Since the intercooler is installed at the front of the vehicle, the radiator channel of the intercooler is often blocked by leaves and sludge (hydraulic oil overflowing from the steering tank), which hinders the heat cooling of the intercooler, so it should be cleaned regularly. The way to clean the intercooler is to use a low-pressure water gun to slowly clean it from top to bottom or from bottom to top at an Angle perpendicular to the plane of the intercooler, but never wash it at an Angle to prevent damage to the intercooler.

The air-air-cooled intercooler is installed in front of the engine with the water tank radiator, and is cooled by the suction fan and the through-surface air of the car. If the intercooler is not properly cooled, it will lead to insufficient engine power and increased fuel consumption. Therefore, the intercooler should be inspected and maintained regularly, the main contents are as follows:

How to clean the outside

As the intercooler is installed in the front, the channel of the radiator of the intercooler is often blocked by leaves and sludge (hydraulic oil overflowing in the steering oil tank), so that the heat of the intercooler is blocked, so it should be cleaned regularly. The method of cleaning is to use a water gun with not too high pressure to hang straight at the Angle of the plane of the intercooler, from top to bottom or from bottom to top slowly rinse, but never oblique to prevent damage to the intercooler

Internal cleaning and inspection

The internal pipes of the intercooler are often attached with mud, gum and other dirt, which not only Narrows the air circulation channel, but also reduces the cooling and heat exchange capacity. Therefore, maintenance and cleaning must also be carried out. Generally every year or engine overhaul, welding repair water tank at the same time, should be cleaned and inspected inside the intercooler.

Cleaning method: add the water solution containing 2% soda (the temperature should be 70-80 ℃) to the intercooler, fill it up, wait 15 minutes, see whether the intercooler has water leakage. If any, it should be dismantled and inspected, welded and repaired (the same as the water tank); If there is no leakage of water, shake back and forth, repeatedly several times, pour out the lotion, and then fill in a clean aqueous solution containing 2% soda ash for flushing, until relatively clean, and then add clean hot water (80-90 ℃) for cleaning, until the discharged water is clean. If the outside of the intercooler is stained with oil, it can also be cleaned with alkaline water. The method is to soak the oil in lye and remove it with a brush until it is clean. After cleaning, blow dry the water in the intercooler with compressed air or cool it naturally or start the engine without connecting the intercooler and the engine connection pipe when installing the intercooler. When the air outlet of the intercooler has no water, connect the engine intake pipe again. If serious dirt is found in the core of the intercooler, carefully check where there are loopholes in the air filter and air intake pipelines, and troubleshoot.
