How does the oil cooler work

2024-01-15

Oil coolers are designed to reduce excess heat generated in lubricants for vehicles, machinery and machinery. For example, a hot engine transfers heat to the oil, which is then circulated through a heat exchanger (also known as an oil cooler), where it is cooled by air or water. Oil coolers achieve cooling by using a cooling medium (usually air or water) to transfer heat from the oil to the medium.

Working principle of the oil cooler: When the oil cooler works, the hot medium enters the nozzle on one side of the cylinder, enters the various folding channels in accordance with the order of entry, and then flows zigzageously to the nozzle outlet.

The cold medium enters the cooler tube on the other side from the water inlet, and then flows into the cooler tube on the other side from the return water cover. During the flow of the cold medium in the double pipe, the residual heat released by the absorbing heat medium will be discharged through the water outlet, so that the working medium can maintain the rated working temperature.

1) Concept:

Because the oil has thermal conductivity and constantly flows in the engine, the oil cooler plays a cooling role in the engine crankcase, clutch, valve assembly, etc. Even for water-cooled engines, the only part that can be cooled by water is the cylinder head and cylinder wall, and the other parts are still cooled by the oil cooler.

2) Materials:

The main material of the product includes aluminum, copper, stainless steel, castings and other metal materials. After welding or assembly, the hot side channel and the cold side channel are connected into a complete heat exchanger.

3) Principle:

At the beginning, the oil temperature of the engine rises faster, and there is a time difference between the oil heat transfer to the engine housing. In this time difference, the oil cooler has a role. At this time, you will feel a very warm feeling when you touch the engine housing with your hand, you will feel a good effect At this time, the temperature of the engine casing has risen to a relatively high degree. If you quickly touch the engine casing, you will find that it is very hot but not that you can't touch it. At the same time, the temperature of the oil cooler is also very high, which indicates that the thermal process has balanced the speed of the motorcycle, and the air cooling and heat conduction process have balanced and will not increase the temperature The temperature at this time is divided into two: 1 the temperature of the oil and 2 the temperature of the engine housing, the former is higher than the latter in the case of no oil cooler and no oil cooling is installed in the case of the same process as above, it will be found that the temperature of the engine rises very quickly at the beginning of the engine housing after a short period of time The temperature of the engine casing you don't dare to touch with your hands even for a short time the usual method we use is to sprinkle water on the engine casing and hear a squeak indicating that the engine casing temperature has exceeded 120 degrees

4) Function:

Mainly used for vehicle, construction machinery, ships and other engine lubricating oil or fuel cooling. The hot side of the product is lubricating oil or fuel, and the cold side can be cooling water or air. During the running of the vehicle, the lubricating oil in the major lubrication system relies on the power of the oil pump, passes through the hot side channel of the oil cooler, transfers the heat to the cold side of the oil cooler, and the cooling water or cold air takes the heat away through the cold side channel of the oil cooler, realizes the heat exchange between the cold and hot fluids, and ensures that the lubricating oil is at the most suitable working temperature. Including the cooling of engine oil, automatic transmission oil, power steering oil, etc.

The function of the oil cooler is to cool the lubricating oil and keep the oil temperature within the normal working range. On high-power reinforced engines, oil coolers must be installed because of the large heat load. When the engine is running, as the temperature increases, the oil viscosity becomes thinner, reducing the lubrication ability. Therefore, some engines are equipped with oil coolers, whose role is to reduce the temperature of the oil, so that the lubricating oil to maintain a certain viscosity. The oil cooler is arranged in the circulating oil circuit of the lubrication system.

1, full flow oil cooler

Full-flow (also known as water-cooled oil cooler) is actually a liquid-liquid heat exchanger. The heat is oil and the coolant is water. Typically, the oil in this heat exchanger enters the tube and the water enters the shell. Countercurrent heat transfer is usually used, that is, the oil outlet and the water inlet are at the same end of the heat exchanger. Because the heat exchange between oil and water is very good, the total heat transfer coefficient should not be less than 1000 W/m2.K, so the design should be quite compact, and the oil can be cooled to the inlet water temperature plus a few degrees Celsius (e.g. 5 degrees). The actual cooling effect depends on the water/oil flow ratio. The greater the water flow, the better the cooling effect.

The oil cooler is composed of a core (which is composed of a lot of pure copper pipes of the same diameter and a partition plate arranged along the axial cross), a cooler body and a cover. Oil flow outside the pure copper pipe, from front to back along the axial flow around the separator up and down. The coolant flows through the tube from the back to the front to keep the oil temperature within a certain range. On a diesel engine with full flow cooling (FFC) lubrication, there is a pressure regulator in the front bracket of the oil cooler. The pressure regulator controls the oil pressure in front of the filter. The oil cooler in the variable flow cooling (DFC) lubrication system has a bypass valve with temperature control on and off to control the amount of oil flowing through the cooler. When the temperature is below 110 ° C, the bypass valve is closed, and only about half of the oil flow through the cooler. When the oil temperature is higher than 110 ° C, the bypass valve opens, and all the oil passes through the cooler.

2, plate fin type oil cooler

The cooler core is installed in the main oil passage in the middle of the cylinder block. The O-ring of the cooler has been modified, the new O-ring has two red bands, and the material of such an O-ring will expand rapidly after contact with oil. Therefore, when the cooler core is loaded into the cylinder, it is necessary to lubricate the O-ring with vegetable oil. O-ring seals cannot be reused.

Oil cooler is a device that accelerates the heat dissipation of lubricating oil to keep it at a lower temperature. On high-performance, high-power enhanced engines, oil coolers must be installed because of the large heat load. The oil cooler is arranged in the lubricating oil road, and its working principle is the same as that of the radiator. The oil cooler is composed of an oil cooler cover cast by aluminum alloy and an oil cooler core brazed by plate fin. The cooling water flows in the space enclosed by the oil cooler cover and the body, and the lubricating oil flows in the plate fin. The heat transfer process of the plate fin oil cooler is mainly completed by the heat conduction of the fin and the heat convection between the fin and the coolant. Ensure oil temperature (90℃-120℃) and viscosity within a reasonable range; It is generally installed on the engine body and installed with the cold cover of the machine.
